Key applications include cleaning delicate electronics like circuit boards and optical devices, degreasing machine parts, and preparing surfaces for coatings and adhesives. It is also a common ingredient in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products and is used in printing and the production of chemicals like acetone.     Cleaning and degreasing
  • Electronics: Used to clean and degrease electrical contacts, circuit boards, fiber optics, and disk heads without leaving residues.
  • Machinery: Cleans grease and grime from mechanical parts and tools in industries like automotive and food processing.
  • Optical surfaces: Cleans glass, lenses, and mirrors in manufacturing and laboratory settings.
  • Surface preparation: Removes oils and contaminants from surfaces before painting, coating, or applying adhesives.
Chemical production and solvents
  • Solvent: Dissolves resins, oils, and adhesives, and is used in the production of other chemicals, such as acetone.
  • Inks and paints: Helps disperse pigments evenly and ensures rapid drying in printing and coating applications.
  • Laboratory: Used as a solvent for reactions and to clean laboratory equipment and slides.
Disinfection and sterilization
  • Medical and pharmaceutical: A key component in disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and for sterilizing equipment and cleanrooms.
  • General sanitation: Used to clean public surfaces and equipment in various industrial environments.

Diacetone alcohol (DII acetone or DAA) is widely used in industry primarily as a high-boiling, slow-evaporating solvent and a chemical intermediate. Its dual alcohol and ketone functional groups allow it to dissolve a wide range of substances, including oils, fats, resins, and polymers. Major industrial uses include:
  • Paints, Coatings, and Lacquers: DAA is a primary solvent in the formulation of paints, varnishes, and lacquers, particularly cellulose ester lacquers. It is valued for producing a brilliant gloss, hard film, and for its lack of strong odor. It also serves as a coalescing agent in waterborne coatings, which helps improve film formation.
  • Cleaning and Degreasing Agents: Its strong solvency makes it an effective ingredient in industrial and household cleaning compounds, metal cleaning agents, and degreasers for machinery and equipment.
  • Chemical Intermediate: DAA is an important building block for synthesizing other industrial chemicals, such as methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), methyl isobutyl carbinol, mesityl oxide, and hexylene glycol.
  • Textiles and Printing: In the textile industry, DAA is used as a solvent in printing pastes, for degreasing wool, and degumming silk. It is also used in coating compositions for paper and textiles and in gravure printing inks.
  • Adhesives and Sealants: It is used as a solvent in the manufacturing of adhesives and sealants, helping to dissolve polymers and resins.
  • Automotive Industry: DAA is a key component in moderate-duty hydraulic brake fluids, where it is often mixed with castor oil. It is also used in some automotive coatings and paint strippers.
  • Other Applications:
    • Wood stains and preservatives.
    • Manufacture of artificial silk and leather.
    • Component in photographic film manufacturing.
    • Solvent for some organic peroxides and a component in some pesticides.

Methanol's industrial uses include serving as a feedstock to produce other chemicals like formaldehyde and acetic acid, which are then used to make plastics, resins, paints, and textiles. It is also a fuel additive, a solvent, an antifreeze, and a raw material for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and biodiesel.  Chemical feedstock
  • Formaldehyde: Methanol is converted into formaldehyde, a crucial component in the production of plastics, paints, adhesives, and construction materials like plywood.
  • Acetic acid: It is a raw material for acetic acid, which is used in synthetic fibers, solvents, and adhesives.
  • Other chemicals: Methanol is used to make methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) (a gasoline additive), methylamines, and chloromethanes.
Fuel
  • Fuel additive: It can be used as an additive in gasoline to improve octane and reduce engine knocking.
  • Automotive fuel: Methanol-based fuels are used in some racing cars due to their clean-burning properties.
  • Biodiesel: Methanol is used in the production of biodiesel.
  • Alternative energy: It is being explored as a fuel for fuel cells and other renewable energy applications.
Solvent and antifreeze
  • Solvent: Methanol is widely used as a solvent in the production of paints, varnishes, and inks. It also functions as a solvent in the manufacturing of vitamins, cholesterol, and hormones.
  • Antifreeze: It is added to automotive antifreeze and windshield washer fluids to prevent freezing. It is also used to prevent freezing in industrial pipelines.
Other uses
  • Pharmaceuticals and agriculture: It is a raw material in the production of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
  • Laboratory: It is a common solvent in research laboratories.
  • Wastewater treatment: It can be used in wastewater denitrification processes.

N-propanol is an industrial solvent used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints, coatings, and inks. It is also used as a cleaning agent, disinfectant, fuel additive, and as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals like esters. Its versatility comes from its properties, including its high solvency and fast evaporation rate.  Key industrial uses
  • Coatings, inks, and lacquers: It acts as a co-solvent, enhancing the drying time and uniformity of paints, varnishes, and printing inks.
  • Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics: It is a carrier solvent in various medicines and lotions, and is used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates and personal care products like deodorants and perfumes.
  • Cleaning and disinfection: N-propanol is used in industrial cleaning agents, degreasers, and sanitizing products.
  • Chemical synthesis: It serves as an intermediate for producing other chemicals, such as esters, which are used in fragrances and plasticizers.
  • Fuel additive: It can be added to gasoline to improve combustion efficiency and stability.
  • Other applications: It is also used in the formulation of dental lotions, adhesives, and in the extraction and purification of organic compounds.
